Today, February 12, is the memorial of Saint Eulalia of Barcelona.
Born in the year 290, Eulalia came from a noble family and openly declared her Christian faith.
In the era of the Emperor Diocletian, Christians were ordered to be killed. His governor Dacian arrived in Barcelona with the same agenda. This angered Eulalia so much that she argued face-to-face with Dacian, telling him to stop the killings.
Dacian was so flustered by her arguments that he had this 13-year old virgin tortured. He wanted to force Eulalia to renounce her faith in God, but the strong-willed teenager refused.
Thus in the year 303, he had Eulalia subjected to 13 tortures including: putting her into a barrel with knives (or glass) stuck into it and rolling it down a street; cutting off her breasts; crucifixion on an X-shaped frame; and, finally, beheading. A dove flew from her neck after decapitation.
