Feast of the Holy Innocents

Today, December 28, is the feast of the Holy Innocents.

From Matthew 2:16-18, it is written: “When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet: A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.”

Venerable Mary of Agreda, in her book of revelations “The Mystical City of God,” narrated what she saw in a vision: the terrible account of the Holy Innocents, when Herod failed to find the Christ Child.

She wrote, “This inflamed the fury of Herod (Matthew 2: 16) and increased his anxiety… he ordered some troops to be gathered in that region and privately instructed some of the more intimate of his officers under severe penalties to kill all the children under two years in Bethlehem and its vicinity. The command of Herod was executed and the whole country was filled with confusion and wailing…”
