“The memory of the great spiritual warfare of Elias still clings to (Carmel). It was here he gathered together all Israel and flung reproach at their heads. ‘How long do you halt between two sides? If the Lord be God, follow Him.’ Here Israel heard his challenge in words of flame, as a burning torch. But here he was more than the Prophet of the sword, here he was also the first of a long line of those who would worship God in spirit and in truth. In his lifetime, disciples gathered round him and learned from him the deep secrets of his prayer and communion with God. His double spirit passed to Eliseus, and from him to the school of Prophets, and so down through the ages, the life of Elias has been continued in these hermits who ever sought inspiration in their great exemplar.”
