Today, December 15, is the memorial of the Blessed Martyrs of Drina.
Blessed Jula Ivanisevic, Berchmana Leidenix, Krizina Bojanc, Antonija Fabjan, and Bernadeta Banja were all members of the Daughters of Divine Charity.
They served the poor in the Serbian village of Pale. Anti-Christian Serb soldiers burned their convent in late 1941.
The sisters were kidnapped by these soldiers and then were forced to march for 40 miles in freezing conditions to military barracks near the east Bosnian town of Gorazde.
The soldiers beat them up and tried to rape them. The sisters, wanting to defend their purity, jumped out of the second-floor windows. Soldiers later stabbed to death those still alive.
They were all martyred in 1941. Cardinal Angelo Amato beatified them in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2011.
