Novitiate community conducts safety, disaster training

By Novice Alvin R. Evangelista

The Spring of Carmel Novitiate Community of the Order of Carmelites in the Philippines recently conducted a safety, disaster preparedness and risk management training.

Facilitated by Br. Nelson B. Anciano, Jr., a certified Safety Officer of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the activity, an orientation on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH), aimed at preparing the members of the community when natural calamities and man-made disasters would occur.

Natural calamities include earthquakes, floods, and storms, among others; while man-made hazards would be those with elements of human intent, negligence, or error such as fires, accidents, acts of terrorism, and others.

The orientation provided the members of the community with an overview of one’s health and safety responsibilities, hazard recognition, hazard control, preparing for emergencies, occupational health and safety programs and who to contact for additional help.

An earthquake and fire drill was conducted after the orientation. (With Ritche T. Salgado, O.Carm.)
