Memorial
Today we celebrate the Queenship of our Blessed Mother, a recognition of the announcement of Gabriel to Mary when he said that her Son will be given by God, the Most High, the throne of David and his Kingdom with have no end (Luke 1:32,33). In the early years of the Church the queenship of Mary was already recognized. In the fourth century, St. Ephraem the Syrian, deacon, confessor and Doctor of the Church, praised Mary as Lady and Queen. Her queenship is celebrated for centuries in hymns, art, and devotional literatures.
In the encyclical of Pope Pius XII, Ad Caeli Reginam, he said that Mary deserved the title because she is the Mother of God, is recognized as the new Eve with Jesus’ work of redemption, is ” beautiful and perfect, and possesses such fullness of innocence and holiness,” and for her ” inexhaustible efficacy of her maternal intercession before the Son and His Father.”
The feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954.
Let us pray.
Father,
you have given us the mother of your Son
to be our queen and mother.
With the support of her prayers
may we come to share the glory of your children
in the kingdom of heaven.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Ave, Regina caelorum
ave, Domina angelorum
salve, radix, salve, porta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta.
Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
super omnes speciosa;
vale, o valde decora,
et pro nobis Christum exora.
